Peonies and Peony Porcelain

Peonies are also called Luoyang Flowers. Peonies are often referred to as the king of flowers. They have golden stamens and pistils, red and jade petals, emerald leaves, and amber branches. They are grandiose and beautiful, giving off a taste of a flourishing age. A country thinks of richness and its people think of power. Peonies symbolize the value orientation of the age and the aesthetic favors of the people.

China is the hometown of chinaware. In English, china is equivalent to “China” in meaning. Luoyang is the hometown of peonies, and Luoyang is also the hometown of China’s chinaware. Peonies and China’s chinaware both have a long history. In the history of China’s chinaware, the chinaware with peony ornaments has evolved into a culture ever since the Sui and Tang dynasties. Among these pottery and porcelain products, the most representative ones include those excavated in Luoyang and mostly burnt by the Gongxian County Kiln, such as the Tang tri-colored peony-ornamented jar with its lid, the tri-foot basin-style stove, the phoenix-mouth peony cask, and the tri-colored peony pillow of the Song Dynasty, etc. The peonies on these articles have large flowers, thick branches and foliage, and rosy and splendid colors, vividly embodying the realities, realistically re-presenting the graceful and elegant manners of Luoyang peonies in the Tang and Song dynasties, and reflecting the aesthetic fashion of the people being obsessed with peonies in that period. So far few porcelain articles with peony ornaments have been excavated in Luoyang, and only a few articles of white-glazed porcelain jars of the Yuan Dynasty have been excavated. However, peony-ornamented porcelain articles have been excavated time and again elsewhere across China, and there are some exquisite ones. The excavated peony-ornamented porcelain articles are mostly bass relief or porcelain items.

Peony porcelain is a kind of peony flowers made of porcelain. The skeleton is as tight as a stone, and the glaze is as clean as a mirror, as white as snow, and crystal clear. The shape is elegant, and the configuration is vivid. It is a kind of aesthetic masterpiece which organically integrates China’s peony culture and ceramic ware art. The state porcelain and state flower are integrated into an organic whole, which is a marvelous godsend with eternal beauty.
